Topological rigidity for non-aspherical manifolds by

چکیده
The Borel Conjecture predicts that closed aspherical manifolds are topological rigid. We want to investigate when a non-aspherical oriented connected closed manifold M is topological rigid in the following sense. If f : N → M is an orientation preserving homotopy equivalence with a closed oriented manifold as target, then there is an orientation preserving homeomorphism h : N → M such that h and f induce up to conjugation the same maps on the fundamental groups. We call such manifolds Borel manifolds. We give partial answers to this questions for S × S, for sphere bundles over aspherical closed manifolds of dimension ≤ 3 and for 3-manifolds with torsionfree fundamental groups. We show that this rigidity is inherited under connected sums in dimensions ≥ 5. We also classify manifolds of dimension 5 or 6 whose fundamental group is the one of a surface and whose second homotopy group is trivial.

Local Collapsing Theory
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a variant of the geometric collapsing theory for Riemannian manifolds contained in the joint work of J. Cheeger, K. Fukaya and M. Gromov (henceforth called the “C-F-G-theory”). The authors make important use of this variant geometric collapsing theory in Farrell and Jones, 1998(2), to develop a theory for collapsing foliated Riemannian manifolds and the...

We show that the aspherical manifolds produced via the relative strict hyperbolization of polyhedra enjoy many group-theoretic and topological properties of open finite volume negatively pinched manifolds, including relative hyperbolicity, nonvanishing of simplicial volume, co-Hopf property, finiteness of outer automorphism group, absence of splitting over elementary subgroups, acylindricity, a...
متن کاملClosed Aspherical Manifolds with Center (to Frank Raymond, with friendship and admiration)
We show that in all dimensions > 7 there are closed aspherical manifolds whose fundamental groups have nontrivial center but do not possess any topological circle actions. This disproves a conjectured converse (proposed by Conner and Raymond) to a classical theorem of Borel.
